Dr. David Hamilton

Dr. David Hamilton served on the faculty of the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts Academy from 1999 through 2022. During his time there he conducted the Wind Ensemble and Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra, taught trombone, coached brass chamber music, and taught music history. Additionally, from 2006-2022 Hamilton served as Department Chair in Music. Prior to working at the Governor’s School, he was Associate Professor at North Greenville College and served there as Coordinator of Instrumental Music.

From 1986-1994, Dr. Hamilton was Principal Trombone in the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. He founded the Aurora Brass Quintet in 1991 and served as trombonist until 2000. During that period Hamilton also directed commissioning projects that produced six large-scale works for brass quintet from various composers from across the southeast. In 2002, he was invited to present trombone master classes at three conservatories in Italy: Mantua, Trento, and Riva del Garda. A longtime advocate of wind music, Hamilton has studied conducting at all levels of his education and has participated in numerous workshops and master classes dealing with wind conducting. In 1998 he was awarded a Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to participate in an Early Music Seminar at Brandeis University.

A graduate of Furman University, David Hamilton earned the Masters Degree in Trombone at New England Conservatory and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook.
